I'll just come out and say it: The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is bizarre. Golden plates? Angels appearing? God appearing to Joseph Smith? To respond with incredulity is, I think, a natural response, especially give the modern scientific world view that is so prevalent today.
Then again, the majority of the Western World for the past millennium believed that all evil and suffering ultimately stemmed from a talking snake. Go figure.
